It’s RaDIo DI! secondary team member also qualified to compete at Globals, making d2k.5 a real family affair!

A husband, Lawrence, with a love for books, takes his wife to a bookstore to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. She storms off in search of Divorce for Dummies and meets the Keeper of the Books, who asks why the wife is so angry on her wedding anniversary. The wife expresses the wish to be anywhere but a bookstore. The Keeper of the Books grants her wish, sending her into the book Lawrence of Arabia, where she encounters Lawrence and his camel, Orville. When the wife complains about the heat in the desert, the Keeper transports her to the new cookbook, The Bread Also Rises, by renowned cookbook author Ernestine Hemingway. Here, the wife acquires a newly invented solar oven and a bag of microwave popcorn. Returning to the desert to pop the corn (there was no sun in the cookbook), the wife is attacked by the popcorn-loving camel Orville. Yelling for help from the Keeper of the Books, the wife finds herself posing for Matthew Brady, photographer of the War Between the States. The wife remembers the instant camera in her purse and wonders if she can take a photo of herself, drop it form the book, and lead her husband to rescue her. Before she can do this, Morse code signals that General Sherman’s army is on the move, and the wife finds herself transported to the deck of the Pequod as Captain Ahab prepares to battle the great white whale Moby Dick. There is, however, no sun with which to take her photo. The light from Ahab’s lantern reflects off the blade of his harpoon, serendipitously inspiring the wife to insert the lantern light into the solar oven to create a “personal lighthouse.” The whale suddenly appears! The wife wants to blind the whale with her personal lighthouse and steer the ship to safety. Ahab argues that such a move would destroy the true spirit of the hunt, man versus whale. They argue. As Ahab grabs the personal lighthouse, the Keeper of the Books returns, noting that she came as soon as she saw the light. The wife is returned to the bookstore, where her husband Lawrence is reading a book How to Get Your Wife Back by Sar E. Dear. They hug, and Lawrence apologizes, vowing to let the wife choose the location for their next anniversary, that is, if there is a next TIME!

With more than seven years experience, Team Manager Jean Lightner Norum is an ardent supporter of Destination ImagiNation. "I think DI helps kids (and adults) learn that while there are many questions with only one right answer, there are many more with an infinite number. It teaches them to think quickly, to troubleshoot in an instant, to improvise. These are skills that are useful in any number of work settings not to mention social ones."
