When you walk though life to a Destination you make decisions
and take risks every step of the way. The sheer courage and conviction
to a purpose and decision of these two team members was exemplary
and seldom rivaled in the history of creative problem solving.
The weight placement appraiser presents this DaVinci to Jared
Brumfield and Gatas Bierhuizen of the Floyd T. Binns Middle School.
Switching TraDItions EL
Meriwether Lewis Elem 145-66096
The extremely clever use of materials to make an essential component
of the Switching Traditions challenge “wowed” the
appraisers. Cardboard tubes, fabric, and other materials were
used to create a marionette which had arms and legs that moved,
eyelids that opened and closed, and even a mouth that moved when
the team member spoke. The ingenuity and creativity of this team’s
traditionator are the exceptional as individual components, and
truly embodied the spirit of the problem and its solutions.
CSI:DI EL Watauga
Elam 145-39433
This team demonstrated creativity beyond their years in their
set design. The set was in three parts and the structure and colors
used created an impression of their different “stages”
during their performance. Through the use of colors, the audience
moved from one location to another. In addition, the sets were
constructed very well. The workmanship was fantastic. This set,
combined with a very funny script, took bathroom humor to a new
level.

Stained glass set is phenomenal and you are a great ensemble

This was one of the three teams out of 19 that chose to build
their structure without glue. To do so was definitely stepping
out of the comfort zone. This one team, however, truly stood out
for their innovative design. Their structure used columns braced
by inner and outer skins of playing cards. They demonstrated high
quality of execution in their skillful cuts and tab connections.
We are most impressed with this elementary team!

This team built a launch board that used an electrical driven
motor that moved the rocket along a track. The different parts
of the rockets separated off by hitting screws at the appropriate
part of the launch. The stars in the sky were lit by an electrical
switch that was tripped at the first separation.
CSI:DI ML Spiller
Elem 145-16302
This team’s overall performance was outstanding from their
opening chair dance to the final resolution. Their comedic timing
and use of puns throughout the performance was extremely creative
and well though out. For their great teamwork, strong line and
creativity, we nominate Spiller MS for the Renaissance Award.

This team showed exceptional use of engineering design in the
development of their team created washing machine and ever changing
pile of laundry. They took a mundane everyday occurrence –
i.e., “What happened to my missing sock?” and created
an entertaining and thought-provoking, as well as extremely funny
look on something that happens to all of us. In fact, they even
managed to look like they were all having a fantastic time while
also totally entertaining all of the appraisers.
CSI:DI SL Monticello

This group exhibited excellent stage presence and fantastic character
portrayal throughout their performance. The team obviously shared
the same vision and successfully accomplished this vision using
teamwork. They constructed extensive props including a duct tape
pig, a paper mache Humpty Dumpty costume (the girl told us she
spent 20 hours on construction!) and a detailed evidence based
board. This all-around balance and excellent made us feel that
they deserve recognition for their integration and stage presence
Round About Courage SL Monticello

This team coordinated 15 separate steps to create a final technical
effect of a rainstorm. Each step was named and related back to
the bug theme. From pulleys, levers, and counterweights to perforated
pipe and a final catch basin, it was well-orchestrated to “rain”
down and sound like a true storm event.

Ben Stern, Austin
Moran, Georgia Proutt – Score Room Runners
These three young runners worked with us all day, showing great
commitment and endurance. These three runners were incredibly
reliable and did the work of a team twice their size. Plus, they
did it the whole day and with great enthusiasm and dedication.
Great job and greatly appreciated!! …. The Score Room
CSI:DI SL John Handley
HS 145-18645
Being a well-seasoned team, these students know what it is like
to be nervous and face adversity on tournament day even with performance
space constraints causing them to make last minute alterations
to their props – the team took the time to talk to an extremely
nervous elementary team sharing their hallway. These older kids
put the younger ones and their team manager at ease. It is for
their selfless spirit and willingness to inspire others even at
the expense of their own preparation time – that we nominate
the CSI:DI team from John Handley HS.
