Lynnhaven MS
Kidz Rulz – Instant Challenge – Middle Level
The Instant Challenge appraisers want to recognize Lynnhaven
Middle School for imagination, creativity and originality with
the creative use of the newly invented and soon to be patented
“invisible duct tape.” We will soon be able to spontaneously
muzzle anyone. We were equally entertained with the integration
of a break dancing Ninja. This team made a lasting impression
on the appraisers.
Pemberton Elementary
Inside Dimension – Elementary Level
Pemberton Elementary demonstrated exceptional creativity in their
skit and side trips. The songs they wrote set the scene, provided
humor, and highlighted their knowledge of the Renaissance. The
artwork was impressive and demonstrated great attention to detail,
especially the Russian Coat of Arms.
Northwood MS
Back At You! – Middle Level
While studying the human circulatory system in science class,
this tea determined that the circulatory system is nothing more
than a delivery return device. Integrating this knowledge in every
aspect of their challenge, they created a “heart topping”
solution. From the circular pasta used to represent cells, to
the leaf blower “lungs,” the flexible hoses as the
veins, and an amazing story of the health concerns of the Queen
of Hearts, this team put their “whole heart” into
solving this challenge!
Monticello HS
Kidz Rulz – Secondary Level
The attention to detail was evident in every aspect of this team’s
set, script, and costumes and left the appraisal team in awe.
The theatrical element of using simultaneous speeches was perfectly
timed and added to the fast pace of the skit. The details of the
Chupacobra’s costume were enough by itself to warrant this
award. Forks represented the mythical animal’s “forked
tongue,” 35mm negatives represented the fact that the animal
has never been caught on film. The metaphors and symbolism ran
throughout the skit and ultimately tied this creative and very
thoughtful performance together.
HEARTH Homeschoolers
How’d tHAT Happen? – Secondary Level
This team designed and produced a magical, dramatic tale, told
through song and choreographed dance. Their music, lyrics, and
dances were completely original – the composer created a
beautiful symphony by overlaying tracks of piano, brass, and strings
onto a digital computer program. The team was bold enough to sing
their program in harmony, and their courage was only surpassed
by their talent! For their incredible creativity expressed through
the language of music, we nominate the HEARTH Homeschoolers.

How’d tHAT Happen? – Secondary Level
The team showed great innovation in the design of a slide puzzle.
The puzzle moved in a specific sequence to create a picture of
an evil Empress. The tiles were moved in sequence through a pulley
system operated by electric motors from the rear. Certainly out
of the Box!
Armel Elementary
Kidz Rulz – Elementary Level
This team created an audience for their soccer game using photographs
of their members for faces. When a goal was scored, golf balls
dropped from a paper tube to hit a level, causing the fans to
do “the wave.” This audience showed both artistic
and engineering prowess, and showcased well the efforts of the
team.
Norfolk Collegiate
Inside Dimension – Middle Level
The structure was built with exceedingly tight tolerances. The
smaller structure slipped into the larger like a hand in a glove,
demonstrating attention to detail and workmanship.
